Identity Management SSN Use Committee

The University of Georgia currently uses Social Security numbers (SSN) in various processes, systems, and data repositories as a means of uniquely identifying students, faculty, staff and other university affiliates. For protecting sensitive data, enhancing security, as well as for adherence to regulatory mandates, the university, per the recommendation from the Identity Management Committee, will replace SSN as a primary identifier with CAN. The use of CAN will not eliminate the need to collect, store and transmit SSN, but will greatly reduce the use of SSN in internal business processes and reduce the number of repositories where SSN is stored. Other measures in conjunction with the work of this committee will work to ensure the secure transmission, storage and use of the SSN following Federal, state and university guidelines.
