bert@uga.edu 706 area code region change will require 10-digit dialing beginning April 3, 2006 ATHENS, Ga.— Beginning April 3, 2006, ten-digit dialing will be required to place a local call in the 706 area code region. This directly affects campus telephone users, since all off-campus calls to the 706 area code region will require ten-digit dialing (preceded by 9). "Calls within the University of Georgia, Athens Campus, telephone system will still be five-digit dialing," said Judy Howell, Manager of UGA Telephone Services. "For example, you will still dial 2-1111 for telephone number 542-1111." Since the UGA campus telephone system has already been programmed to accept ten-digit dialing, Howell recommends that everyone begin using the ten-digit local dialing method immediately. She also recommends that automatic speed dialers in telephone sets, fax machines, alarm dialers, security dialers, etc., be reprogrammed as soon as possible. This change is necessary because of the growing number of new phone, computer, and cell phone lines in the area. "Beginning May 16, 2006, a new telephone area code, 762, will begin being assigned to new subscribers in the current 706 area code region," said Howell. Since this is an overlay, no one in the 706 area code will be forced to change their existing telephone number, thus our existing UGA telephone numbers will not change area code.
