bert@uga.edu Phase 2 blocking on gateway Intrusion Prevention System begins March 23, 2006 ATHENS, Ga.— In January of this year, the Office of Information Security, a division within Enterprise Information Technology Services, began blocking Internet connections that contained viruses and worms at the campus perimeter. Using a device known as an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), all inbound and outbound connections are automatically dropped if any virus or worm is detected in the data stream.
Building on the success of this implementation, the Office of Information Security will initiate Phase 2 blocking on March 23, 2006, beginning 5:00am. This second phase continues the efforts to proactively prevent attacks against the information and information systems of the University from entering the campus network. Blocking of well known attacks from the following categories will be enabled during Phase 2: BACKDOOR, BOOTP, DCERPC, DDoS, DHCP, DTSPCD, FINGER, FTP, and HTTP. For additional information on specific attacks to be blocked, please visit the following Web site: http://infosec.uga.edu/soc/ips.php
