UGAMail performance improvements scheduled for May 2006
ATHENS, Ga.—
In order to address performance-related issues with UGAMail, the University's
enterprise-wide email system, EITS will be making a number of system
changes during the month of May. Three change dates
have been scheduled to coincide with the end of Spring Semester final exams
and the beginning of Summer Semester. This time period was selected to ensure
the least possible impact to University operations.
The change dates, and associated changes, are as follows:
|
Date | Change | Improvement Details
|
| May 9 |
Operating system upgrade |
Additional performance gains for IMAP and Webmail
|
| May 11 |
Suspect-Listing implementation |
Spam control. Suspect-Listing is used to issue a "Temporary Failure" to
off-campus email systems that
have sent spam to UGAMail. Generally, suspected systems that are legitimate
will retry later and, if so, will be allowed to send email
for 45 days.
Spam sending engines typically do not retry, thus less spam.
EITS will monitor the effect of suspect-listing after
implementation; remediation
steps include exempting suspected mailers which are actually legitimate,
adjusting the threshold for determining suspects, and disabling the
feature if necessary.
|
| May 16 |
TCP rate limiting and total connection limiting implementation |
Spam control. All mailers, on-campus and off-campus, are affected. If email
is received by UGAMail at a rate of either:
-
40 connections in 10 seconds (rate limiting)
-
50 concurrent connections (total connection limiting)
further connections will be ignored for 15 minutes.
EITS will monitor the effect of rate and total connection limiting
after implementation; remediation steps include raising the aforementioned
limits and disabling the feature if necessary.
|
UGAMail downtimes resulting from these changes will be announced through the
usual channels and included on the EITS Systems Status page:
