Office of Information Security's learning program among UGA programs receiving best practice recognition in southeastern competition

ATHENS, Ga.— The UGA Office of Information Security has received a best practice award for its SATE Program—Security Awareness, Training, and Education— from the Southern Association of College and University Business Officers (SACUBO). A best practice award recognizes initiatives, projects, or services which makes a significant difference to the operation of an institution.

According to information released by SACUBO, colleges and universities across the southeastern United States were encouraged to submit initiatives for the "Best Practices 2006" award. The best practices submitted to SACUBO were reviewed and the top seven finalist institutions were asked to present their best practices at the organization's annual meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, April 9-11.

Stanton Gatewood, UGA's Chief Information Security Officer, presented the SATE program to more than 600 college and business officers at the annual meeting, where he learned the program had received runner-up honors.

"Having the UGA SATE Program as a runner-up in the SACUBO "Best Practices 2006" competition was an honor and testament of higher education's commitment to securing our institutions," said Gatewood. "SACUBO was a great place to interact with peer and aspirant institutions. It was a chance to 'evangelize' about security awareness, training, and education regionally."

The SATE Program, which includes the ongoing development of an online training program to inform UGA staff about the risks and threats they face and the steps they can take to protect themselves, was similarly honored in October 2005. The program received the first-place award in the 2005 University System of Georgia Best Practices competition.
