bert@uga.edu Information security essentials course to be taught at UGA ATHENS, Ga.— The UGA Office of Information Security, a division within Enterprise Information Technology Services, has partnered with the SANS Institute to bring a six-day introductory course in computer and network security to the UGA campus in Athens, Georgia. SANS Security Essentials is being offered to Information Technology professionals and other interested individuals who wish to enhance their IT security skills. The SANS Institute ( www.sans.org) is a leading provider of computer security training that allows individuals to master the practical steps necessary for defending computer systems and networks. "Under the SANS-EDU program, we are able to offer this course to all faculty and staff of the University System of Georgia at substantial reduction —more than 75%— from the standard conference fee," said Stanton Gatewood, UGA's Chief Information Security Officer. "This is the same course offered by the SANS Institute at their regular conferences held at various locations around the U.S. and the world." The six-day course begins on Monday, February 12, 2007, and ends the following Saturday. Topics covered include networking concepts (day 1), defense-in-depth (day 2), Internet security technologies (day 3), secure communications (day 4), Windows security (day 5), and Unix security (day 6). The online course will be free of charge and will teach participants with little or no experience important concepts and technology that every computer and Internet user should know. Availability of the online security course will be announced in a separate press release.
