CIO and Associate Provost Dr. Barbara A. White provides insights into mentoring, leadership in May issue of CIO Magazine

CIO and Associate Provost Dr. Barbara A. White
ATHENS, Ga.— Dr. Barbara A. White, CIO and associate provost, shared her views on developing Information Technology leaders in a recent article published by CIO Magazine. Dr. White is quoted along with several public sector and industry CIOs on the topic of mentorship, coaching, and succession planning.

The article is titled "How to Develop the Next Generation of IT Leaders." It focuses on issues of retirement, outsourcing, and the tight talent supply that is thinning IT's leadership ranks.

White states that she is addressing the potential leadership gap in her IT department using a variety of strategies, such as a mentoring program. The program includes a mentorship committee, handbook, and identified mentors to assist middle managers. She calls the program a powerful tool to improve performance, retention, morale, and career progression.

Another tactic in her plan is the creation of a shadow program. "It goes back to this whole issue of building the staff, the level of expertise, of keeping good people. We have quite a few people who want to move on to the next level, and we need to help them better understand the organization," White says.

CIO Magazine, started in 1987, provides technology and business leaders with insight and analysis on information technology trends and a keen understanding of IT's role in achieving business goals. The magazine has a circulation of 140,000 CIOs and high-level IT executive readers.
