UGA Chief Information Security Officer Stanton Gatewood to become CISO for University System of Georgia

UGA CISO Stan Gatewood assumes role as CISO for the University System of Georgia on August 1
ATHENS, Ga.— Dr. Tom Maier, Vice Chancellor for Information and Instructional Technology/Chief Information Officer for the University System of Georgia, has announced that Stanton (Stan) Gatewood, UGA Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), has accepted the position of CISO for the University System of Georgia.

Stan will assume his new duties on August 1.

In an email sent by Maier to information technology professionals and leadership in the University system of Georgia, he states that Stan was hired "after a long search that included a number of highly qualified candidates."

"I am honored and proud to be selected from such a rich pool of applicants and will strive to secure and protect the University System's information and information systems," said Gatewood. "Serving as the CISO for the University of Georgia has been both challenging and rewarding, and I believe UGA is more secure than when I arrived some 5 and a half years ago."

Gatewood has over 20 years of experience in information security, including the military, AT&T, and the University of Southern California, in addition to UGA.

"Stan's expertise will be missed at UGA, as he has been a major contributor to not only my senior leadership team, but also to those involved in protecting the sensitive and critical data of the institution," said Dr. Barbara A. White, CIO and associate provost at UGA. " Stan has built a strong network statewide, regionally and nationally and provided leadership to several major initiatives that will continue after his departure."

To ensure the continued efforts in minimizing risk to UGA's Information systems and assets, Brian Rivers has been asked to focus on the issues of institutional and local information security while a national search is conducted for Stan's replacement. Brian currently serves as director for Security, Operations, and Infrastructure for EITS and can be reached at brivers@uga.edu or through the UGA Office of Information Security.
