Upgrades to database system on IBM mainframe improves system performance, offers improved features

ATHENS, Ga.— EITS recently completed the four-phase implementation schedule to upgrade the database environment on the IBM mainframe to DB2 Version 8. DB2 is IBM's relational database management system.

DB2 Version 8 offers a number of significant improvements, including enhanced scalability, application porting, security, architecture, and continuous availability. As the primary database on the IBM mainframe, this upgrade has a direct benefit on a number of key applications at UGA, including OASIS student information and registration system, electronic payroll, University Housing, accounting, budgets, Human Resources, student fees, admission, and recruitment.

"This upgrade was critical to the University's business operations and student information systems," said Dorinda Peachey, System Administrator Principle of System Provisioning and Maintenance. "The new database will add functionality and enhance the current performance improvements that we are seeing with the DB2 tools."
