Central monitoring and reporting service for users of F-Secure anti-virus software provides additional protection

ATHENS, Ga.— As computer users on the Internet, everyone is aware of the dangers of acquiring computer viruses, spyware, and other malicious tools as we surf the Internet. Anti-virus software is essential to protecting your computer and network from basic threats encountered online.

UGA students, faculty, and staff can download F-Secure anti-virus/firewall/anti-spyware software free of charge
The University of Georgia has teamed up with F-Secure to provide protection to all faculty, staff, and students at no charge. All members of the University community are strongly encouraged to install F-Secure on each Windows computer. The EITS Office of Information Security offers a download page to make downloading and installing F-Secure an easy process:

infosec.uga.edu/user/av.php

The site includes F-Secure packages for Windows Vista and other versions of Windows. Linux versions are also included in the F-Secure suite. A UGA MyID is required to download F-Secure.

A download link to ClamXav is provided for Macintosh OS X users.

According to Dorin Dehelean, an IT security analyst with the Office of Information Security, there is an added advantage for F-Secure users on the UGA Athens campus.

"If a machine is infected with a virus," said Dehelean, "it reports this information back to the F-Secure managing server." "I can then review this information, and, if F-Secure could not remove the virus, I can inform the Department Network Liaison (DNL) so that he can take appropriate action."

Information provided to the DNL includes which computer is infected, with what virus, and the infected file(s) and registry keys.

"If they need help cleaning the computer, I advise the DNL to contact the EITS Help Desk. A clean-up can take up a lot of time, depending on how resilient the infection turns out to be," said Dehelean.
