drainey@uga.edu PAWS wireless network upgraded in both the Main and the Science Libraries ATHENS, Ga.— The PAWS wireless network in both the Main Library and the Science Library were upgraded to provide complete coverage throughout the buildings. Enterprise Information Technology Services (EITS), the University Libraries, and TEC Services installed 74 APs (Access Points) throughout both the Science and Main libraries. Access points are devices which distribute the wireless signal over a given area. Autonomous APs were replaced with more robust centralized APs and will now be managed and supported by EITS. According to David Stewart, IT senior manager with EITS who has been overseeing the project, the centrally managed model "gives students, faculty, and staff greater access to the network for instructional purposes." EITS received Student Technology Fee monies to expand wireless service to campus over the next year. The University offers wireless access to students via PAWS (Personal Access Wireless/Walkup System), which was initiated in 2001.
