Tuesday, September 8, 2009 CONTACT: John Newton, Jmnewton@uga.edu Brian Rivers, director of university information security, to speak at cyber security event on September 11 ATHENS, Ga.— Brian Rivers, director of university information security, will be among a group of nationally recognized experts to speak at the September 11 cyber security event at UGA.
The Office of Security and Emergency Preparedness, the Center for International Trade and Security, and Enterprise Information Technology Services are hosting "The Growing Cyber Security Threat: From National Security to UGA" on Friday, September 11, from 10:00 a.m. - Noon, in the UGA Chapel. Rivers will be joined by FBI Special Agent Lee Kirschbaum and Kevin Mandia, a cyber security expert and owner of the information security firm Mandiant Systems. "As far as information security risks and threats, they always change, but for the most part the university has changed and adapted along with the threats," said Rivers. "But threats continue to evolve. People are getting better at attacking us. Over the last 10 years there's been a shift from people hacking for fun to people hacking for profit.
