EITS fundraising events provide over 6,300 meals to northeast Georgians

ATHENS, Ga.— The generosity of EITS over the past several months has been of direct benefit to our less-fortunate northeast Georgia neighbors.

During the Christmas holidays, $914.00 was collected in a silent auction (3656 meals) and 764 pounds of food (600 meals) donated. In conjunction with "Helping Hands and Linking Arms Day on April 25," EITS staff contributed 180 pounds of food (145 meals).

These two events, along with a recent ice cream social, which raised over $447.00 (1790 meals) with more than 129 pounds of food collected (100 meals), bring the total to just over 6,300 meals.

"We enjoy having time with our friends and co-workers during our social events," said Jennifer Hudson, a member of the EITS Events Planning Committee, "and it makes it even more special to know that we are also helping others through our camaraderie."

Charles Leggett, also an EITS Events Planning Committee member, echoed these sentiments, "I enjoyed spending the afternoon connecting with my co-workers and raising money together for a good cause."

Members of the committee are Charles Leggett, Billy Jones, Alisa Flanery, Jennifer Hudson, Micah Hudson, Doug Lloyd, Shannon Marable, Jeannie Mcelhannon, David Stewart, Greg Topp, Patrick Wagman, and Mingguang Xu.

Items for the silent auction were contributed by EITS staff, the UGA Athletic Association, and several local Athens businesses, including Aurum Studios, Frontier, Foster's Jewelers, Heery's Clothes Closet, George Dean's, Five Points Deli & More, Southern Comforts, McDonalds, Jingles, REM, and Jewels.

"I am very proud of our staff for their efforts to help others, and grateful to the UGA Athletic Association and the local Athens area businesses that supported the silent auction," said Dr. Barbara A. White, CIO and associate provost. "Aligning our events with community service is a wonderful example of the EITS support to UGA's efforts, and for Governor Purdue's Team Georgia Customer Service Initiative."

The Team Georgia Customer Service Initiative [Web site] was established by Governor Purdue to acknowledge and promote excellent service to the citizens of Georgia. As Governor Purdue states on the Web site for the initiative, "One citizen at a time, one customer at a time, we're changing the way people feel about state government."

The food and money were donated to the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia [Web site], which distributed more than 6.7 million pounds of food over the past year.
