Security health fair, new UGA privacy policy,
and SecureUGA highlight National
Cyber Security Awareness Month
ATHENS, Ga.—
National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), conducted every October
since 2001, is a national public awareness campaign to
encourage everyone to protect their computers and our nation's
critical cyber infrastructure.
While the UGA Office of Information Security provides security awareness
year round, NCSAM provides an opportunity for all UGA students, faculty, and
staff to consider online security and safety. In particular, the office wanted
everyone at UGA to be aware of the following:
-
Fall 2009 Computer Health and Security Fair
UGA students, faculty, and staff are invited to bring their laptops to the
second floor lobby of the Miller Learning Center between
9 a.m. and 4 p.m., October 20,
for security
assistance.
The security checkup includes virus scans and software updates,
spyware removal, and more.
Requests will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis.
-
SecureUGA
SecureUGA, which was launched in 2008, is an information
security education and awareness program that includes mandatory,
self-paced, online awareness presentations. All UGA employees
currently
on the UGA payroll are required to complete ten
awareness modules by November 30, 2009. This
includes faculty, staff, administrators, and all student workers,
graduate assistants, research assistants, teaching assistants,
and work-study students.

UGA Privacy Policy Ratified by University Cabinet
The UGA Privacy Policy directly supports the university's efforts to
eliminate and/or secure the use of sensitive data.
This policy applies protections and restrictions on the
collection, dissemination, and use of personally identifiable and
sensitive information with specific restrictions on the use of SSNs.
Developed by the UGA Office of Information Security in conjunction with the
Information Technology Management Forum Security Committee,
the Office of the Registrar, and the Office of Legal Affairs,
with ratification by University Cabinet in September of this year,
the UGA Privacy Policy becomes
UGA's official policy on protecting the privacy of individuals at UGA.
For more information on these events and initiatives, please see the UGA
NCSAM Web site:
