Brian Rivers to serve as director of University Information Security

ATHENS, Ga.— Brian Rivers, currently serving as director of Security, Network Operations, and Infrastructure for EITS, will serve as director of University Information Security.

Rivers came to UGA from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco, where he was responsible for voice and data communications, as well as security services. Other responsibilities included communications infrastructure operations and strategy, contract negotiation, budget and portfolio management, and policy and standards development. Since coming to UGA, he has provided leadership in a number of critical information technology areas, including the University's vast video and data network as well as operational security of UGA's technology resources.

CIO and Associate Provost Barbara A. White has indicated that the role and scope for this position will focus on critical university-wide security issues; activities and planning such as risk management; incident response; legislative compliance and regulation; policy development; business continuity and disaster recovery; and awareness, education, and training. She went on to say that the position will be responsible for leadership of the security operations component within EITS, and will also serve as the delegated authority for the CIO authorizing surplus equipment disposal per the University's policy. The position will report to the CIO.

Rivers' two-year appointment begins immediately, after which a national search will be conducted for a UGA chief information security officer (CISO).
