EITS observing National Data Privacy Month

Monday, February 3, 2014

Enterprise Information Technology Services at the University of Georgia is participating in National Data Privacy Month, which is held January 28 through February 28.

Data Privacy Day on January 28 kicked off the month-long awareness campaign. UGA was among a number of higher education institutions, businesses and government agencies across the country to be named a Champion of Data Privacy Day by the National Cyber Security Alliance.

UGA plans to send weekly tips to faculty and staff about how to protect personal data, display fliers around campus for students, and sponsor special classes at Training and Development.

The EITS Office of Information Security (InfoSec) will conduct a computer security basics class on February 13 for those wondering if they’re safe online while using a work or personal computer. The class is recommended for beginning to intermediate computer users who want to improve their computer security skills and knowledge.

In addition, a class about the tools, services, and support InfoSec can offer UGA departments will be conducted on March 20. InfoSec can help University departments with security assessments, training, incident response, mitigation, and compliance.

Registration for both classes is available at hr.uga.edu/employees/training/.

Data Privacy Day, observed annually on January 28, is an international awareness effort to encourage Internet users to consider the privacy implications of their online actions and motivate all companies to make the protection of privacy and data a greater priority. The awareness campaign is coordinated and led by the National Cyber Security Alliance.

EDUCAUSE, a non-profit group of IT professionals and leaders in higher education, is promoting Data Privacy Month through February 28.
