Housing residents: Register your wired devices

Monday, December 9, 2013

All residents in University Housing will be required to register their devices connected to the wired network in residence halls after Wednesday, January 18, at 5 p.m. Wireless devices will not be affected.

EITS is replacing the system that provides network access for personal devices — such as desktop computers, laptops and game consoles — using the wired network in all University Housing residence halls. Even if you have already registered a device, you will need to register it again once the new system is available.

The change will take place on Wednesday, December 18, at 5 p.m. For most University Housing residents, they will have to register their wired device(s) after the residence halls re-open on January 2.

The new system will allow users to register their device(s) through a web browser.

To register a device(s):

  1. Turn off the device and restart it
  2. Open a web browser
  3. Unregistered devices will be automatically directed to https://drp.uga.edu
  4. Accept the “Computer and Network Use at UGA” agreement
  5. Enter your MyID and password

Most devices will be automatically registered and you will see a banner notifying you of a successful registration. After your device has been registered, it takes about 10 minutes for it to become active on the network.

If your device was not automatically registered:

  • Manually enter the MAC address (a set of numbers and/or letters on your device connect to a network) in one of the supported formats:
  • xxxxxxxxxxxx
  • xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx
  • xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
  • xxxx.xxxx.xxxx
  • Enter a description of the device
  • Enter a device type from the selection menu
  • Click “Register”
  • The page will notify you that the device has been registered.

Note: If you don’t know how to find your device’s MAC address, the EITS Help Desk wiki (http://eitshelpdesk.uga.edu) has detailed instructions for Xbox 360, Playstations, Wii, Roku, Apple TV, MacBook and Windows computers. It is suggested that you become familiar with these steps before the change or use a wireless device with a web browser to access this website.

Registering a Game Console

To register a device without a web browser — such as Xbox, Playstations or DVRs — find the hardware (MAC) address of your device. Then, follow these steps:

  • Turn off your device and restart it
  • Open a web browser on any device connected to the network (wired or wireless)
  • Visit https://drp.uga.edu
  • Accept the “Computer and Network Use at UGA” agreement
  • Enter your MyID and password
  • Manually enter the MAC address of your device in one of the supported formats:
  • xxxxxxxxxxxx
  • xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx
  • xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
  • xxxx.xxxx.xxxx
  • Enter a description of the device
  • Enter a device type from the registration menu
  • Click “Register”
  • The page will notify you that the device has been registered.

Additional Steps

If you receive a certificate error or other miscellaneous errors:

  1. Note that the messages are normal, as traffic is being redirected
  2. Cancel the errors/notifications
  3. Manually enter https://drp.uga.edu into your web browser.

Note: After your device has been registered, it takes about 10 minutes for it to become active on the network.
