Wireless Improvements Planned for Residence Hall

Friday, February 26, 2016

Based on student feedback, the University of Georgia’s central technology department, in partnership with University Housing, will conduct a pilot of wireless service improvements for residence halls.

During Spring Break, technicians with Enterprise Information Technology Services (EITS) will install almost 300 wireless access points throughout Russell Hall, one of the largest residence halls at the University. The results of the pilot will be used to determine future wireless enhancements in other residence halls.

EITS recently conducted a survey of all University Housing residents to get their feedback on PAWS-Secure wireless service in the residence halls.

The survey showed that Russell Hall would be the best environment for the pilot, which calls for installing wireless access points in many rooms throughout the residence hall.

In recent years, students have been using more wireless devices, which put a greater strain on each wireless access point in buildings. This plan calls for significantly increasing the number of wireless access points in residence halls.

After installing the new wireless access points during Spring Break, Russell Hall residents will be asked to provide their feedback on the wireless improvements. EITS will review the results and work with University Housing on additional residence halls for wireless enhancements.

The project is being funded by the Student Technology Fee.
