IMAP - OS X Mail (Macintosh)
UGAMail
------------------------

SSL is a security option for use with the UGAMail system, and we encourage you to use SSL whenever possible. However, problems are being reported with inbound SSL (most notably when automatically copying mail to the Sent Folder). If you experience any problems when sending mail, try disabling the inbound SSL setting.

If you would like to read your mail with the OS X Mail program, you will need to follow these instructions to configure it properly.

Step One

Launch OS X Mail and pull down the Mail menu, then select Preferences. Click on the Accounts button, then Add Account for new, or Edit to select an existing highlighted account.

Step Two

Under the Account Information tab:
Account Type = IMAP

(Note: if you have an account that says Account Type = POP, you
cannot edit that account to be IMAP. You must create a brand new
account with the same information as the original POP account)

Description = your email address or other short title for this account
Email Address = MyID@uga.edu (substitute your actual ID for MyID)
Full Name = your name as you wish it to appear on your e-mail
Incoming Mail Server = email.uga.edu
User Name = your MyID
Password = leave this blank
Outgoing Mail Server = email.uga.edu

Step Three

Click the Options button for the SMTP Server Options dialog window
Outgoing mail server = email.uga.edu (should already be there)
Server port = 25 (should already be there)
Checkmark the Use SSL box
Authentication = none
User Name and password = blank
Click OK to exit SMTP Server Options.

Step Four

Select the Special Mailboxes tab at the top to define where various messages are stored. It is recommended you set:

Store Drafts on Server = on
Store Sent on Server = on
Delete Sent Mail = Never
Store Junk on Server = on
Delete Junk Mail = Never
Move Deleted to Trash = on
Store Deleted on server = on
Permanantly Erase = When Quitting Mail

Step Five

Select the Advanced tab at the top. It is recommended you set:
Enable this Account = on
Include When Checking Mail = on
Use the Account Directory it assigns (ie do not type anything in this box)
Keep Copies of Messages = All Messages and Their Attachments.
IMAP Path Prefix = blank
Port = 993 (should be there already)
Use SSL = on
Authentication = password

Step Six

Click on the OK button at the bottom. You will be returned to the Accounts Window, and can choose how often to automatically check for mail (do not choose 1 minute). and what notification sound you prefer

Step Seven

Click on the Composing icon at the top of the Accounts Window. We recommend you set Format = Plain Text. Now click the red close button and you are now ready to process your mail.

When you check your mail and it asks for your password, we recommend you do NOT let the computer store your password.

Step Eight

Now set your folder names to be used instead of the OS X Mail standard folder names (see next paragraph). This is important if you ever use Webmail in addition to OS X Mail. Renaming will ensure that all sent, draft, and junk mail will go to the UGAmail standard named folders.

Once you are reading your email, click on the Mailboxes icon and look at the items in the 'Mailbox Drawer'. If there are multiple accounts visible, click the triangle in front of the desired account downwards.

If there's a folder named Sent (not the airplane icon named Sent) then highlight Sent and do a menubar Mailbox and pull down to Use Selected Mailbox For and select Sent.

If there's a folder named Draft (singular not plural) then highlight Draft and do a menubar Mailbox and pull down to Use Selected Mailbox For and select Drafts.

If there's a folder named Junk Mail, then highlight Junk Mail and do a menubar Mailbox and pull down to Use Selected Mailbox For and select Junk.
