UGAMail Help Home

UGAMail and Your Internet Service Provider

You can read and send your UGAMail e-mail via the web by connecting to the UGAMail website. Reading your UGAMail e-mail on the Web requires no special set-up or software on your part and is the easiest way to avoid any problems.
Alternately, you may use a special-purpose e-mail program such as those described in IMAP E-Mail Programs. Due to the way some ISPs configure their services, you may encounter problems sending mail from off-campus locations while using these special-purpose e-mail programs.

If you can read your UGAMail email but are unable to send e-mail from your IMAP E-Mail Program, your ISP might be blocking email being sent through port 25. ISPs block this port to make it harder for "spammers" to use their systems to send out 'spam' (unsolicited bulk email).

If this is the case, try changing your outgoing SMTP sending port to 587. In the preferences section where you specified the outgoing mail server, it will read email.uga.edu. You should be able to specify a sending port for your UGAMail. Try using port 587 instead of port 25. If you have any questions on how to change your sending port to 587, or if changing your sending port to 587 does not does not allow you to send messages using email.uga.edu, please call the EITS Help Desk at 706-542-3106.
