Access to VPN to require two-factor authentication

If you use UGA’s Remote Access Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access University systems, you will soon need to use Archpass to complete the log-in process.
Beginning January 3, 2017, access to all VPN groups will require use of Archpass, UGA’s two-factor authentication system. Requiring Archpass for authentication for all VPN groups is an extra security measure designed to prevent fraudulent log-ins.
Two-factor authentication requires “something you know” (such as a password) and “something you have” (such as a physical device) to access specified systems. This process requires users to verify their identities by providing both a password and a physical device.
At UGA, the “something you have” is a mobile device, tablet or landline enrolled with Archpass used in conjunction with a UGA MyID password to access UGA systems.
Currently, only users who need access to restricted data are required to use Archpass to authenticate.
Archpass offers you multiple methods for receiving passcodes and authenticating to systems.
You can authenticate with a phone call, SMS text message or through the ArchPass mobile app on a smartphone or tablet. For people currently outside the U.S. using the VPN, ArchPass’s push and passcode methods on the ArchPass app are recommended. SMS texting also provides 10 one-time use codes that are valid for 30 days.
If you are not already an Archpass user, you can self-enroll a cell phone, landline or tablet in Archpass through the Duo Self-Service Portal on the EITS website. You can find complete instructions for enrolling at archpass.uga.edu/enroll.
If you are only using Archpass to access the 01 Default VPN, you do not need to have your supervisor fill out an ArchPass access web form.
When logging in to the VPN, you will be asked for your MyID, password and an Archpass authentication method. Users who have not been granted privileges to access restricted data should still use the 01 Default VPN group.
