Tech Tips for New Bulldogs

Monday, May 11, 2020

Welcome #UGA24! We are so glad you’re officially part of the Bulldog Nation.

First things first – we’re Enterprise Information Technology Services (EITS), the central IT organization for students, faculty and staff at the University of Georgia. We provide support for campus-wide technology services, including wireless and wired networks, email, student information systems, software and more.

Here are some things you’ll need to get started with technology at UGA:

  • Know your MyID and set your password: You’ll need these things to log in to a number of online University resources. Your MyID was assigned to you during your admissions process, and you should have received a link to set up your MyID password.
  • Enroll a device in ArchPass: Some UGA systems, including eLearning Commons (eLC) and Athena, require more than your MyID and password for access. To log in to these systems, you’ll have to use ArchPass, UGA’s two-step login solution, powered by Duo. There are multiple ways to authenticate, including a push notification, passcode via the Duo Mobile App, passcode sent via text message or a phone call.
  • Access software for free or at a discount: Visit our software site to learn about what’s available to you as a UGA student. There are a couple of free software packages, including Microsoft Office 365 and Zoom.
  • Zoom for orientation: You’ll definitely need Zoom for new student orientation online, but you don’t actually need an account. Learn more about Zoom and tips for using the video conferencing platform.
  • Figure out which computer to buy: UGA doesn’t require you to purchase a certain type of computer, but some degree programs like design or engineering may require you to have certain software. Either way, we recommend modern laptops with at a minimum Windows 10, or Mac OS High Sierra or newer. iPads and Android devices, or netbooks, such as Chromebooks, are not recommended as your primary device.
  • Know where to get tech help: The EITS Help Desk is the central point of contact for computing services at UGA. If you need help, do not hesitate to reach out to us. You can find DIY tech help by visiting our website. Feel free to email us at helpdesk@uga.edu or use our online chat service at hd.support.uga.edu
